Lutheran Lecture Series XXIV
June 1-2, 2019
Grace Lutheran Church, Wichita
Making Use Of, Begging For, and Running To Private Confession and Absolution
The congregation gathers. The Sunday liturgy begins. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION: "I, a poor, miserable sinner." We have sinned - in Thought, Word, Deed - and so we confess. And the pastor speaks the forgiveness - Absolution - in Christ's name. Wonderful! Gifts given. Gifts received.
But there's more. There's another way to confess sin: privately, individually, before the pastor. The rite of Individual (Private) Confession and Absolution is also found in the hymnal (LSB 292). Just as Pastor Nathan absolved King David after hearing his confession of sin, so our Lutheran Confessions extol Private Confession and Absolution for us. Luther urges us to make use of its healing medicine. Beg me (the pastor) for a share in it. If you are a Christian, then you ought to be happy to run more than a hundred miles to Confession and not let yourself be urged to come.
The Reverend Doctor D. Richard Stuckwisch Jr. will catechize and teach on the importance and use of Private Confession and Absolution for both pastors and laity. This year's Lutheran Lecture Series begins on Saturday, June 1. Dr. Stuckwisch will lecture on Saturday and preach at the Divine Services on Sunday, June 2 (8am at Grace, 11am at Trinity) and lead the Sunday morning Bible Class (9:30am at Grace). Plan to be the guest of Grace Lutheran Church on the weekend of June 1-2. Call 316–685–6781 or email email@example.com for more info.

The Reverend Doctor Don Richard Stuckwisch Jr., a 1993 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary - Fort Wayne, Indiana, serves as pastor of Emmaus Lutheran Church in South Bend, Indiana. This has been his pastorate since his ordination in May of 1996.
Two advanced degrees - his doctorate in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame and his Master of Sacred Theology from CTS/FW - have served him well in his ministry and as a member of the Lutheran Service Book (LSB) project (1998-2006). Through his work on the LSB project, there grew another important project - Treasury of Daily Prayer. Dr. Stuckwisch was assigned the task of choosing the Old Testament and New Testament readings for each day for this magnificent devotional resource.
In addition to serving Emmaus, Dr. Stuckwisch is presently the First Vice President of the Indiana District, serving under District President Rev. Dr. Dan Brege.
Dr. Stuckwisch was born in Niagara Falls, New York on November 9, 1965 to the Rev. Don R. and Sandra Stuckwisch. He married LaRena Chancellor at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska on June 15, 1985. That union has been blessed with ten children. As of this writing, they are proud grandparents of another ten! His most enjoyable hobby has been and continues to be reading aloud to his children and grandchildren.
